Shipley is a town in the metropolitan borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It is located approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Bradford and 9 miles (14.5 km) northwest of Leeds. Historically, Shipley was a centre for wool and textile production during the Industrial Revolution. Today, the town has a population of around 30,000 and is known for its independent shops, cafes, and restaurants, as well as its Victorian architecture and scenic location on the banks of the Leeds-Liverpool canal. Shipley is also home to several notable landmarks, including the Grade II-listed Saltaire Village, which was founded in 1853 by philanthropist Sir Titus Salt as a model village for his workers. Saltaire Village is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and attracts visitors from around the world. Other notable landmarks in Shipley include Roberts Park, a Victorian park designed by Sir Joseph Paxton; the Kirkgate Centre, a community arts and performance space; and the Shipley Glen Tramway, a historic funicular railway that dates back to 1895.
