Mansfield is a large market town and the administrative centre of the Mansfield District in Nottinghamshire, England. It is the largest town in the wider Mansfield Urban Area and the second largest settlement in Nottinghamshire. Mansfield gained the Royal Charter of a market town in 1227. Mansfield is located on the River Idle, 12 miles (19 km) north of Nottingham and 14 miles (23 km) south of Chesterfield. The town is situated on the edge of Sherwood Forest, which is famous for its associations with the legend of Robin Hood. Mansfield is also home to a number of historical buildings, including Mansfield Castle, which was built in the 11th century. The town's economy is based on a number of industries, including manufacturing, retail, and tourism. Mansfield is also home to a number of schools and colleges, including Mansfield College, which is a further education college. Mansfield is a popular tourist destination, and visitors can enjoy a number of attractions, including Sherwood Forest, Mansfield Museum, and the East Midlands Designer Outlet.
